Various noodles served with fish balls, fish cakes and often a fish dumpling., comes in your choice dry or soup. Soup versions would have all ingredients in a bowl of soup. Dry ones have all ingredients in a dry bowl of noodles, served with chilli paste, pork lard, soy sauce and cooking oil for mixing with the noodle. Usaually they would ask if you want chilli with a dry order, as well if you want vinegar. Some stalls do not provide vinegar but if this is not your favourite, best to let them know. I prefer mine without vinegar, its taste can be overwhelming!

Fish Ball/Cuttlefish Ball

Jan 2021

Tasty and unique balls, serving fish, cuttlefish and meat balls.

Run by 3 elderly sisters, this stall has been around for ages, started by the eldest sister and soon joined by the other two. I remember this was the first stall I tried when I first visited Hong Lim. I was impressed since then but had not come back until recently, not for the lack of trying as it was not easy to catch them open.

They would usually not open if one of them falls ill or has some medical appointment as every part of their operations is “done in house”. They’d make their own balls and even wash the dishes too. Such that if one is not available, the other two might find it hard to cope.

They open when they’re ready which is usually around 10am, and close when they’re sold out, which is around 2pm. I went for the soup with rice but was informed the mee sua (thin noodles) is the most popular with customers. They’d also ask for the mee sua not to be separated from the soup for takeaways as the mee sua tastes better soaked in the soup. Lots of fishy people around.....

(Fish Ball) Dong Fang Hong 1.jpg

3 types of balls are served here, with a tiny wanton, which is tasty and nice. We get fish balls, sotong or octopus balls, and meat balls. The $6 medium sized one gives me 3 of each ball and 2 wanton, and some lettuce….

The soup is a little bit on the fishy side but what do you expect from a seafood soup? It’s not a complaint as it is delicious. The fish ball is solid and well, tastes slightly fishy…. I can see that real fish has been scrapped out of the bones to make these great balls of fish... the sotong balls are likewise solid. Both are tasty, solid to the bite yet tender. Very well made and you can taste the meat used. Interestingly, the fish balls have a slice of carrot sticking out like a fish sticking out its tongue, if they have one….

The meat ball to me is the best of the lot, mixed with salted fish, it gives you the oomph in terms of taste as the salted fish’s tastiness is exceptional. It is nice big but tender. This is the biggest and best balls of them all!

(Fish Ball) Dong Fang Hong 5.jpg
(Fish Ball) Dong Fang Hong 10.jpg

After all this, my mind is now filled with that song "Big Balls by AC/DC", which is at times my ring tone…

And I’m itching to tell you about them

Oh we had such wonderful fun

Seafood cocktail, crabs, crayfish

(But we’ve got the biggest balls of them all!)

Fishball Noodles

Mar 2021

This would be the fish ball noodle stall I'd recommend when asked, with home made fish cakes.

With a stroke of luck, this stall had a pretty short Q when I was once there looking for food. Went for it not expecting much but it was a revelation!

(Fish Ball) Thye Hong Fish Ball 1.jpg

A $5 large bowl came with A LOT of noodles! I had to try not to mix thoroughly, so that the chilli sauce, with the nice pieces of lard, don’t get too diluted with unwanted noodles. Why? The chilli sauce was brilliant, not too spicy; slightly sweet, it was fabulous.

The fish balls and fish cakes were soft and bouncy, inside your mouth, they seemed to be dancing; I couldn’t help but think of AC/DC’s “Big Balls”'s bouncy rhythm and it bounces just about to the tune… it was tasty and brilliant.

All the fish cakes are made by the uncle, he would take a few clumps and slice them. The slices are not too thin, thick and irregular, all the more better for us to enjoy its brilliant texture and taste!

(Fish Ball) Thye Hong Fish Ball 4.jpg
(Fish Ball) Thye Hong Fish Ball 5.jpg
(Fish Ball) Thye Hong Fish Ball 7.jpg

I was here today at 945am, the lady in front of me was surprised he was still open, surely I heard wrong! So I asked the uncle when he closes and he said “soon”. I showed surprise and he laughed, saying that lady just complained he was closing late today while I was complaining he closes early! He just closes when it’s sold out, good luck to those behind me…..

We have to give it to the uncle for keeping things simple and original. Many fish ball stalls have gone to become vinegar sellers; or become bak chor mee sellers. If nothing else, this shows his confidence in his product.

My favourite fishball noodle stall!

Cushy soft balls….

Each the size of a ping pong ball, the balls here were so soft I felt like bouncing it on the floor to see how high it would bounce.

(Fish Ball) Hong Xing 13.JPG

It was not just the fish balls, the meat balls were just as soft too, and tasted brilliant. In fact, I liked the meat balls better as it had a strong special taste to it.

(Fish Ball) Hong Xing 29.jpg

A $4.50 bowl gave 4 fish balls and 2 meat balls, pretty good deal. Vinegar was given with chilli for the dry noodles. Not sure if the chef was distracted when he took my orders as the person in front of me was a friend and they chatted, but I was not asked if I wanted either. So do be careful to tell them your preferences.

The chilli mix was excellent, not very spicy but deliciously umami. Some of my non chilli eating friends and family all approve of its taste.

A popular stall, and one of my friend’s favourite, it is no surprise given the nice and soft texture of their fish and meat balls! It is also my favourite fish and meat ball place now!

Thery have a branch at Bukit Merah View hawker centre, with no drop in standard.

This article is short and brief mainly because I'm trying this out to see if everyone prefers a simple and quick one to too much talking cock....  😎😎

Excellent soup noodles, brilliant, and spicy dried ones

I put them as very hardworking noodle stall, one of the very few that operates throughout the day and night, dawn to dusk, and beyond. The only one in Marine Terrace, and probably the whole island. You wake up early, come here for breakfast, they're serving; come by for a late dinner, they're still open.

And it is not for a lack of revenue, the crowd here is not massive, but the stream of custom is as steady as, well, a stream. It's non- stop. Move closer to the stall and you get why the wait here is always quite decent, they are also probably the only stall with 2 chefs cooking simultaneously.

(Fish Ball) Seng Hoe 30.jpg

The dried noodles here were quite tasty, not really a stand out in terms of taste but definitely above average; and certainly spicier than most. Jiak Kaki Yao loves the dried noodles here, he who denies he is attracted to spicy food (he now sheepishly laughs when proclaiming he loves certain places, then gives everyone the knowing look, cause the place serves spicy food), so it is quite hot.

(BCM) Seng Hoe, Marine T 3.jpg
(Fish Ball) Seng Hoe 19.jpg

The soup noodles were also excellent, though not spicy🙄, it was slightly sweet and fresh, with a brilliant savoury after taste. A little bit like Mrs. Ziggy (got to at least make one person smile...). Brought a Long-time friend here, after finishing his dinner, his only comment was, "we can come back again".

(Fish Ball) Seng Hoe 17.jpg

Already serving delicious soup, you can bet that their fish soup would be good. It was, served with fish that was fresh, and sliced thick, it is a good choice.

(Fish Ball) Seng Hoe 33.jpg
(Fish Ball) Seng Hoe 36.jpg

Twice the operating hours, twice the operating speed, twice as spicy, and almost twice as delicious...  Seng Hoe serves noodles with a very comfortable delicious taste that would suit most, especially the spicy tongues, just ask for less or no chilli for the if spiciness is not your thing. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Tastes much, much better than it looks

On a day I arrived late, and for some reason decided to try this hand-made fish ball noodle stall, despite the other jiak kakis having selected their choices, they very easily followed suit, and even offered to order and pay… They are encouraging me to be late…

The owner of the stall was not around that day, but his son was in control of the situation. Steady behind the counter boiling and cooking. Looking barely out of his teens, this boy has a future ahead of him!

(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 1.jpg

While collecting our noodles, I got a little worried, the noodles looked really bland and dull. My only hope were the fish and meat balls, they looked authentic and hand-made, a good excuse for having being duped.

Not only were they authentically hand-made, the fish and meat balls were certified scrumptious. We just stared at each other briefly after tasting, and continued to enjoy our meal. Only towards the end that I thought I needed to confirm what that earlier stare meant, both Yao and Alan agreed that this was simply brilliant.

Soft and bouncy, the fish balls had a very nice savoury taste of fresh fish meat, they were crunchy soft, very good bites.

(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 8.jpg
(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 11.jpg
(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 5.jpg

Likewise the meat balls, equally soft and crunchy, just as delicious. I have decided not to compare which was better, they were simply great stuff to be enjoyed and not compared.

(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 6.jpg

The noodles, despite looking dull and blend, devoid of colours, were delicious too. The chilli was not too spicy but savoury, they definitely tasted a lot better than they looked. The given soup was also wonderful, so we can postulate that their soup noodle would be fantastic too.

We were thoroughly impressed, so much so we all agreed this was definitely good enough to have something written about them, so here it is!

(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 4.jpg
(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 3.jpg

I have returned to try their laksa. Again excellent, and again tasted better than it looked.

Not too creamy but tastefully delicious, the soup for the laksa had a delicious base taste that boosted the curry flavour. Good stuff.

(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 20.jpg
(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 15.jpg
(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 17.jpg

The fish soup here was good as well, fresh fish, with some seaweed for taste. It is a viable option too.

(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 22.jpg
(Fish Ball) Yong Wah 21.jpg

Mrs. Ziggy insisted on trying after I told her about this place, we tried what Yao tried that day, the fish hall noodle, adding meat balls. Only to realize we just made item 1 on the menu become the previously ordered item 2… how silly!🤣🤣

Very nice place for an enjoyable fish ball and meat ball noodles, I love the meat balls here and would add that with the laksa, and the fish soup next time.

Soft bouncy delicious fish balls

Very popular fish ball noodles chain, always with long Qs whichever outlet you go. A friend of mine loves the fish ball noodle at Ru Ji. It would usually be his top choice whenever we visit old airport road food centre in the mornings, it would not be, “let’s see if there’s a Q” but “let’s hope the Q is not too long”.

It is now a corporate and all the stalls run by employees.

(Fish Ball) Ru Ji 1.jpg
(Fish Ball) Ru Ji 8.jpg

What is so good about this fish ball noodle? The fish ball! Delicious and very soft, they were bouncy. It was a joy having it bounce as you munch, the fact that it has a good strong fish taste adds to the joy.

(Fish Ball) Ru Ji 2.jpg
(Fish Ball) Ru Ji (Old Airport) 4.jpg
(Fish Ball) Ru Ji 4.GIF

The fish cakes tasted equally good, good strong fish taste and soft texture too. These are the only 2 items that come with each order, besides bean sprouts.

(Fish Ball) Ru Ji 13.jpg
(Fish Ball) Ru Ji 3.jpg

A dry order would have chilli and vinegar in the noodle, with some fresh fried shallots. The chilli gravy had a very nice safe taste, not too spicy and would be well liked. Vinegar an option I’d always discard, but if you like it, go for it.

All in all a very good treat, this would be the standard for fish ball noodles, a good model for this dish.

Fresh and bouncy fish balls

To try this fish ball noodle, we had to come early, always with a Q (not too long, about 10-15 mins max), they could sell out by 930am!

I was advised to bring a "torch light" if I were to take photos here, as the area around Hock Lee is always a little dim around this time, unfortunately I didn't heed wise words, so some photos may be a little on the dark side. 😝😎

(Fish Ball) Hock Lee 9.jpg

Each bowl of fish ball noodle had nothing but noodles and fish balls, bean sprouts and chives as condiments and chilli and vinegar optional for the dry version.

(Fish Ball) Hock Lee 4.jpg
(Fish Ball) Hock Lee 16.jpg

The chilli is quite spicy, and savoury too. It was wonderful. The noodles were quite decent as well, but the fish balls… they were fantastic.

Soft, crunchy and bouncy, every bite I could feel it bouncing as I crunch through it. With a nice aroma of fresh fish, it was delicious as well.
